You see someone collapse.

Someone calls 999. CPR has started. Then somebody arrives with an AED.

Would you be confident enough to open it and use it?

A defibrillator can look intimidating if you have never handled one before, but an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is designed to be used by members of the public.

Once switched on, it will guide you through what to do with clear instructions.

It will analyse the person’s heart rhythm and determine whether a shock is required.

You cannot accidentally shock someone who does not need one.

The AED will only advise or allow a shock when it identifies a shockable rhythm.

But there is a big difference between knowing that and having actually practised it.

**Heading away for the Bank Holiday weekend? ☀️🚗⛺**

Whether you are off camping, spending a few days by the coast, visiting family or simply enjoying the extra day at home, a little first aid preparation is worth adding to the list.

A few simple things to think about before you go:

🩹 **Pack a first aid kit**
Check it before you leave. Plasters, sterile dressings, gloves and other basic supplies are far more useful when you actually have them with you.

🔥 **Know how to deal with burns**
BBQs, campfires and cooking equipment all bring risks. Cool a burn immediately with cool or lukewarm running water for at least 20 minutes.

🐝 **Be prepared for allergies**
If somebody travelling with you has a prescribed adrenaline device, make sure it goes with you and everyone knows where it is kept.

💊 **Do not forget regular medication**
It sounds obvious, but medication is easily forgotten when packing for a few days away.

📍 **Know where you are**
If you need emergency help, particularly when camping or walking somewhere unfamiliar, being able to give your location can save valuable time. What3words can be useful alongside other location information.

🚑 **And remember the basics**
For a serious emergency, call 999 or 112. Knowing some basic first aid can make those minutes before professional help arrives considerably less daunting.

Is CPR different for women and people with breasts?

No.

If someone is in cardiac arrest, the principles of CPR are the same. Yet women are less likely than men to receive bystander CPR.

One possible reason is hesitation about touching or exposing someone’s breasts.

For chest compressions, place your hands in the centre of the chest and start CPR. There is no need to delay compressions simply to remove a bra.

When an AED arrives, however, the pads need to be attached directly to bare skin in the correct positions.

Depending on the clothing and bra being worn, you may be able to work around it. If the bra interferes with correct pad placement, removing or cutting it may be the quickest and most practical option.

If breast tissue is covering the correct position for an AED pad, use the back of your hand to move the breast sufficiently to allow the pad to be placed correctly.

In a real cardiac arrest, concerns about embarrassment must not delay lifesaving treatment.

Protect the person’s dignity as far as reasonably possible, but do not delay CPR or defibrillation.

These are exactly the practical conversations we should be having during first aid training. Being prepared for the reality of an emergency can help remove hesitation when somebody’s life depends on action.

Because cardiac arrest does not discriminate, and neither should our willingness to help.

Two FULL First Aid qualifications. Three days. One combined course. 🚑

Why should parents consider first aid training too?

We spend a lot of time talking about first aid training for workplaces, schools, nurseries and childcare professionals.

But what about at home?

Children explore. They fall over. They put things in their mouths. They become unwell. Most of the time, a cuddle, a plaster or a little reassurance is all that is needed.

Occasionally, something more serious happens.

Would you know what to do if your child:

• Started choking?
• Became unresponsive?
• Had a seizure?
• Suffered a serious burn?
• Developed a severe allergic reaction?
• Had significant bleeding?

Parents do not need to become healthcare professionals. They need the confidence to recognise when something is wrong, provide appropriate first aid and know when to call for further help.

And there is another reason to learn.

First aid skills are not only for your own children. One day it could be a friend, another parent, a grandparent or a stranger who needs somebody nearby to act.

Would you step in?

Someone collapses in front of you.

They are unresponsive and not breathing normally.

Would you know what to do next?

For many people, the biggest barrier is not willingness to help. It is the fear of getting something wrong.

Should I move them?
Am I checking their breathing properly?
What if I hurt them doing CPR?
Can I really use that defibrillator?
What if I make things worse?

Those are perfectly reasonable questions when you have never practised what to do.

First aid training cannot remove every bit of uncertainty from a real emergency, but it can give you something incredibly valuable: a plan.

Recognise that something is seriously wrong.
Call 999.
Start CPR.
Get an AED and use it as soon as possible.
Follow the instructions you are given.

You do not need to be a paramedic to make a difference.

Sometimes the most important person in an emergency is simply the person who is already there and decides to act.

So, be honest with yourself.

What is blended learning?

If you need a first aid qualification but taking several full days away from work is difficult, blended learning could be worth considering.

Blended learning combines online learning with face-to-face practical training.

You complete an approved e-learning element before attending your classroom session. This allows some of the underpinning knowledge to be covered at your own pace, while your time with the trainer can focus on practical skills, scenarios, discussion and assessment.

Depending on the qualification, this can significantly reduce the amount of time you need to spend in the classroom.

But blended does not mean entirely online.

First aid is a practical skill. You still need to demonstrate that you can perform skills such as CPR, use an AED and manage different first aid situations appropriately.

At DTMK Training Services, blended options are available for several of our regulated first aid qualifications, including Emergency First Aid at Work, First Aid at Work, First Aid at Work Requalification and Paediatric First Aid.

What does a defib actually do?

There is a common misconception that a defibrillator simply “restarts” a heart that has stopped.

That is not quite what happens.

An Automated External Defibrillator, or AED, analyses the electrical activity in the heart and determines whether a shock is appropriate.

In certain types of cardiac arrest, the heart’s electrical activity becomes chaotic and the heart can no longer pump blood effectively.

A defibrillator delivers a controlled electrical shock with the aim of stopping that chaotic activity, giving the heart’s natural electrical system an opportunity to regain an effective rhythm.

And if a shock is not appropriate?

The AED will not deliver one.

That is one reason you should never be frightened of using a public access defibrillator. The machine analyses the casualty’s heart rhythm and guides you through what to do, usually with clear spoken instructions.

But the defibrillator is only part of the response.

Early recognition, calling 999, good quality CPR and early defibrillation all matter.

Our training gives you hands on experience using training AEDs alongside CPR, so that seeing one for the first time does not have to be during a real cardiac arrest.

Do ribs break during CPR?

They can, and the possibility of causing an injury should never stop you from starting CPR when someone is in cardiac arrest.

For an adult, effective chest compressions need to depress the chest by around 5 to 6 cm. That requires significant force, and rib or chest injuries can happen as a result.

It can be unsettling. You might hear or feel something during compressions and immediately wonder whether you should stop.

Keep going.

If someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally, the priority is maintaining blood flow to their brain and other vital organs until more advanced help is available.

A rib injury can be treated.

Cardiac arrest cannot wait.

Good CPR training also matters. Learning the correct hand position, compression depth and technique helps you deliver effective compressions rather than simply pushing as hard as possible.

On our courses, you will actually practise CPR, receive feedback on your technique and experience how physically demanding good quality compressions can be.

Would you know what to do if a baby choked?

It is one of those situations most people hope they will never face.

A baby who is genuinely choking may be unable to cry, cough effectively or breathe. Knowing how to recognise the difference between an effective cough and a serious airway obstruction is important.

For a choking baby under one year old, first aid may involve:

• Encouraging an effective cough if they can cough
• Giving up to five back blows if the cough is ineffective
• Giving up to five chest thrusts if the obstruction has not cleared
• Calling 999 and continuing to alternate back blows and chest thrusts if necessary
• Starting CPR if the baby becomes unresponsive and is not breathing normally

Importantly, abdominal thrusts are not used on babies under one year old.

Reading the steps is useful. Actually practising them is very different.

Our paediatric first aid training gives learners the opportunity to practise choking techniques using infant manikins, ask questions and develop the confidence to respond appropriately.

Because if it ever happens, you do not want the first time you think about these skills to be during the emergency.

When should you retrain your first aid team?

Passing a first aid course is not the end of the learning.

First aid qualifications usually have an expiry date, but waiting until the certificate is about to expire is not necessarily the best approach.

Skills fade when we do not use them regularly, particularly practical skills such as CPR. Guidance can change too, and equipment or procedures within your workplace may be updated.

That is why regular refresher training can be so valuable.

It gives your team an opportunity to:

• Practise CPR and AED skills again
• Refresh skills they may not have used since their course
• Discuss incidents or near misses from the workplace
• Become familiar with new equipment
• Practise realistic scenarios relevant to their environment
• Identify gaps before a real emergency exposes them

For workplace first aiders, the HSE strongly recommends annual refresher training between formal qualification renewals.

And refresher training does not have to mean sitting through the same course again. A practical session built around scenarios can challenge your team and help turn knowledge into confident action.

Have you heard of Benedict’s Law?

From September 2026, new allergy safety requirements come into effect for schools in England.

Benedict’s Law follows the tragic death of five-year-old Benedict Blythe, who died following an anaphylactic reaction at school in 2021. His family’s campaigning has helped bring about stronger protections for children living with allergies.

The changes place greater emphasis on a whole-school approach to allergy safety, including:

• Clear allergy policies and procedures
• Annual allergy awareness and emergency response training for staff
• Appropriate plans for pupils with known allergies
• Access to appropriate emergency medication
• Staff who can recognise anaphylaxis and respond quickly

This matters because anaphylaxis does not wait for a trained first aider. A reaction could happen in a classroom, playground, dining hall, sports field or on a school trip.

At DTMK Training Services, allergy and anaphylaxis already form part of our paediatric first aid training, including practical familiarisation with adrenaline auto-injectors and EURneffy®, the needle-free nasal adrenaline treatment for severe allergic reactions.

🚑 MYTH: “You can swallow your tongue.”

You can’t.

Your tongue is attached inside your mouth, so it isn’t possible to literally swallow it. However, there is a real first aid issue behind the myth.

When someone becomes unconscious, the muscles in their body relax. The tongue and other soft tissues can then contribute to blocking their airway, particularly when they are lying on their back.

So what should you actually do?

👉 Check whether they are responsive.
👉 Open their airway using a head tilt and chin lift.
👉 Check for normal breathing for up to 10 seconds.
👉 If they are breathing normally, place them in the recovery position and call 999.
👉 If they are not breathing normally, call 999 and start CPR.

And importantly, don’t put your fingers or an object into someone’s mouth to try to “stop them swallowing their tongue”.

Good first aid is often about replacing myths with simple actions that actually help.
