Which paediatric first aid course do you need?
The appropriate qualification depends on why the training is required and the responsibilities the learner will hold.
Early years providers in England must make sure that their paediatric first aid arrangements meet the current Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. This includes having at least one person with a current full Paediatric First Aid certificate available whenever children are present and accompanying children on outings. Providers should also consider the number of children, staff, rooms, working patterns and activities involved so that a suitably trained person can respond quickly.
Emergency Paediatric First Aid is a one-day qualification covering essential emergency skills for infants and children. It can be suitable for people who need emergency paediatric first aid training, including certain newly qualified early years practitioners, but it does not remove a setting’s need to maintain the full paediatric first aid provision required by the EYFS.
The two-day Paediatric First Aid qualification provides broader coverage of childhood illnesses, injuries and emergencies. It is normally the relevant route for childminders and for members of staff who will provide the full paediatric first aid cover required within an early years setting.
Schools, sports clubs and organisations responsible for both employees and children may benefit from a combined qualification. These courses reduce unnecessary duplication while allowing learners to achieve separate adult workplace and paediatric first aid qualifications.

A full paediatric first aid qualification with one classroom day
For many early years and childcare professionals, the challenge is not deciding whether paediatric first aid matters. It is finding enough time to complete a full qualification without placing additional pressure on colleagues, staffing ratios or family commitments.
The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) can now be completed through blended learning with DTMK. Learners undertake approximately six hours of structured e-learning before attending one practical classroom day at our training centre in Bletchley, Milton Keynes.
This is not an online-only course or a shortened qualification. Successful learners receive the same regulated Paediatric First Aid qualification as those completing the traditional two-day classroom route.
How does blended Paediatric First Aid work?
The knowledge-based part of the course is completed through Qualsafe’s e-learning platform. This allows learners to work through the material at a suitable pace before attending their practical training.
The classroom day is then used to develop, practise and assess the skills that cannot be learned properly from a screen. Learners work with paediatric training manikins and first aid equipment while receiving guidance and feedback from an experienced trainer.
The practical day covers the management of incidents involving infants and children, including unconscious casualties, paediatric CPR, the use of an AED, choking, seizures, bleeding, shock, injuries, burns and a range of childhood medical emergencies. It also considers conditions such as asthma, meningitis, febrile convulsions, allergic reactions and anaphylaxis.
All required practical assessments are completed during the classroom day.
Who is the course suitable for?
This blended paediatric first aid course is particularly suitable for people working in nurseries, pre-schools, childcare settings and education, as well as childminders and others who have responsibility for infants and children.
The full Paediatric First Aid qualification is commonly selected by people who need training that supports the paediatric first aid requirements applying within early years provision. Employers and settings must still assess their own staffing arrangements, responsibilities and first aid needs when deciding which qualification and how many trained staff they require.
Learners must be at least 14 years old on the first day of the qualification. Anyone under 16 should be supervised when using their first aid skills.
What must be completed before the classroom day?
The e-learning is a compulsory part of the qualification and must be completed in full before attending the practical session. It cannot be finished after the classroom day.
Access is normally issued approximately four weeks before the practical date. Learners should begin promptly rather than leaving the modules until the final few days. Anyone who has not completed the required e-learning will not be able to take part in the classroom training or assessment.

Paediatric First Aid
The two-day Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid provides comprehensive training for people responsible for infants and children.
It covers essential life-saving procedures such as assessing an emergency, managing an unresponsive infant or child, CPR, defibrillator use and choking. It also considers a broader range of childhood illnesses and injuries, including anaphylaxis, asthma, meningitis, febrile convulsions, head and spinal injuries, burns, poisoning and bleeding.
The qualification has been designed around the paediatric first aid requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. It is particularly relevant to early years practitioners, nursery staff, pre-school teams, childminders and others who need a full paediatric first aid qualification.
Emergency Paediatric First Aid
The one-day Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid concentrates on the immediate actions required when an infant or child experiences an emergency.
Learners practise assessing an incident, managing an unresponsive infant or child, CPR, defibrillator use, choking, seizures, bleeding and shock. The course also considers minor injuries, bites and stings.
This qualification may be appropriate for people who require emergency paediatric first aid skills rather than the full two-day qualification. Early years employers should check the learner’s role and the overall requirements of their setting before deciding that the emergency course is sufficient.
Blended Paediatric First Aid
The full Paediatric First Aid qualification is also available through blended learning. Learners complete the required online learning before attending the practical face-to-face training and assessment.
Blended learning can reduce the amount of time an employee needs to spend away from the workplace while leading to the same regulated qualification as the corresponding classroom route.
It is not an online-only first aid course. Both the online and face-to-face elements must be completed successfully. Learners who prefer to undertake all their training directly with a trainer can select the traditional classroom course instead.
Paediatric First Aid Annual Refresher
The three-hour Paediatric First Aid Annual Refresher gives existing paediatric first aiders a structured opportunity to revisit essential knowledge and practise important skills between full qualifications.
Regular practice can help people maintain confidence in infant and child CPR, choking procedures, casualty assessment and the management of an unresponsive infant or child.
The refresher supports continuing confidence and competence, but it does not extend the expiry date of the learner’s primary paediatric first aid certificate. The correct full qualification must still be renewed when required.
Combined Emergency Workplace and Paediatric First Aid
This combined course allows learners to achieve both the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work and the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid.
It is delivered over an extended training day and is particularly useful in settings where a learner may need to respond to emergencies involving employees, visitors and children. Potential audiences include schools, childcare organisations, sports clubs and activity providers.
The combined structure reduces duplication while retaining the required learning and assessment for both regulated qualifications.
Combined First Aid at Work and Paediatric First Aid
This comprehensive combined route enables learners to achieve both the full Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work and the full Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid.
Delivered over three extended training days, it is designed for people who require broader first aid competence for adults, infants and children. It may be especially valuable for schools and organisations where one person has responsibilities relating to both workplace and paediatric first aid provision.
By combining overlapping elements, the course reduces the time required compared with completing both qualifications entirely separately.
Allergy and Anaphylaxis Training for Schools
The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Allergy and Anaphylaxis Awareness is a focused two-hour qualification created for staff, governors and volunteers working in schools and educational settings.
It helps learners understand allergy management, recognise allergic reactions and life-threatening anaphylaxis, respond appropriately in an emergency and understand the use of emergency allergy medication. It also considers asthma emergencies and the broader effect allergies can have on a pupil’s health, wellbeing and school experience.
This training is particularly relevant to schools reviewing their arrangements in response to current Department for Education guidance on allergy safety. It can be delivered on-site so that teaching, administrative, catering, lunchtime, club and support staff can develop a consistent understanding of their responsibilities.

Arrange paediatric first aid training for your organisation
Paediatric first aid courses can be delivered at a suitable nursery, school, childcare setting, workplace or other organisational venue.
For most regulated first aid qualifications, private courses are available for a fixed course price for up to 12 learners. This can provide excellent value when several members of staff require the same qualification, while reducing travel and time away from the setting.
Your venue will need sufficient space for learners to participate safely and comfortably in classroom learning, floor-level practical activities and assessments. If you do not have a suitable training room, speak to us about whether an appropriate local venue can be arranged.
We can discuss full Paediatric First Aid, Emergency Paediatric First Aid, annual refresher training, combined adult and paediatric qualifications, and focused allergy and anaphylaxis training for schools.

How long does a paediatric first aid certificate last?
The principal Emergency Paediatric First Aid and Paediatric First Aid qualifications are normally valid for three years. Learners should complete the appropriate training again before their certificate expires. Annual refresher training can help maintain skills between full qualifications but does not replace renewal of the primary certificate.
Can adult and paediatric first aid be completed together?
Yes. DTMK offers combined emergency and combined full qualifications for people who need to provide first aid to both adults and children. These courses reduce duplicated learning while retaining the requirements and assessments associated with the separate regulated qualifications.
What if the course we need is not currently scheduled?
Every course displayed on the DTMK website can be requested even when no public date is currently available. You can express interest in a future course or arrange private training for your organisation.
