Two Full First Aid Qualifications Delivered Together

This combined course enables learners to achieve two separate regulated qualifications through one carefully structured programme:

  • Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF)

  • Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF)

The course has been designed to avoid unnecessary repetition where the qualifications contain related learning outcomes. Shared subjects are taught together while learners still complete all training and assessments required for both full awards.

Delivered over three extended classroom days, the programme develops the knowledge and practical skills needed to respond to a wide range of illnesses, injuries and first aid emergencies involving adults, children and infants.

It is particularly suitable for schools, childcare providers, children’s activity organisations, sports clubs and other workplaces that require both qualified workplace first aiders and paediatric first aiders.

The course can be arranged privately at your own workplace, school, childcare setting or another suitable venue. This allows organisations to train a group together, reduce travel and select dates that suit their operational requirements.

Learners who successfully complete all required assessments receive two separate Qualsafe certificates, each valid for 3 years.

How the Combined Course Works

First Aid at Work and Paediatric First Aid contain several related learning outcomes. The approved combined programme allows shared subjects to be delivered together while retaining the distinct adult, child and infant knowledge and practical skills required by each qualification.

The course is delivered over three extended face-to-face training days and contains:

  • Approximately 22 hours of guided learning and assessment

  • Trainer-led teaching, demonstrations and group discussion

  • Practical training using adult, child and infant manikins

  • Repeated opportunities to practise essential first aid skills

  • Nine practical assessments completed throughout the course

  • Two multiple-choice question papers

  • Directed reading and preparation between training days where required

This is not a shortened version of either qualification. Learners must attend the complete three-day programme and successfully meet every assessment requirement to receive both full awards.

DTMK normally includes the Qualsafe optional catastrophic-bleeding training and practical assessment. Approximately 30 additional minutes may therefore be added to the programme to deliver and assess this module properly.

The course can be delivered privately at your organisation’s venue for groups of up to 12 learners. DTMK will discuss the proposed dates, daily timings, venue facilities and any accessibility requirements before confirming the booking.

What Does the Combined Course Cover?

The programme develops the knowledge and practical skills needed to respond to a broad range of first aid situations involving adults, children and infants.

Subjects covered include:

  • The roles and responsibilities of workplace and paediatric first aiders

  • Minimising infection risks and using personal protective equipment

  • Consent, accident records and incident reporting

  • Understanding the first aid definitions of an infant and a child

  • Assessing an emergency incident safely

  • Conducting scene and primary surveys

  • Summoning appropriate assistance

  • Adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation and safe AED use

  • Bites and stings

  • Burns and scalds

  • Eye, nose and ear conditions and injuries

  • The respiratory and circulatory systems

  • Recognising and responding to hypoxia

  • Asthma and hyperventilation

  • Chest injuries

  • Different types of shock and fainting

  • Allergic reactions and anaphylaxis

  • Heart attacks and angina

  • Stroke

  • Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains

  • Applying support and elevated slings

  • Head and spinal injuries

  • The jaw-thrust technique and manual in-line stabilisation

  • Conducting a secondary survey and head-to-toe examination

  • Meningitis and sepsis

  • Diabetes

  • Poisonous substances

  • Electric shock

  • The effects of extreme heat and cold

Practical training is adapted for the different anatomical and treatment considerations associated with adults, children and infants. Learners practise these skills using appropriate equipment under the supervision of an approved trainer.

How Is the Combined Course Assessed?

Assessment takes place throughout the three training days.

Learners must successfully complete nine practical assessments:

  • Adult CPR and the safe use of an automated external defibrillator

  • Child CPR and the safe use of an automated external defibrillator

  • Infant CPR and the safe use of an automated external defibrillator

  • Managing an unresponsive casualty

  • Responding to a choking casualty

  • Managing wounds, bleeding and shock

  • Managing fractures and suspected spinal injuries

  • Managing anaphylaxis

  • Conducting a secondary survey

Learners must also complete two multiple-choice question papers under assessment conditions:

  • Question paper one contains 20 questions. The minimum pass mark is 14 out of 20, and the maximum time allowed is 40 minutes.

  • Question paper two contains 25 questions. The minimum pass mark is 18 out of 25, and the maximum time allowed is 40 minutes.

Both qualifications are graded Pass or Fail. Every mandatory practical assessment and both written assessments must be completed successfully before the two qualifications can be awarded.

Practical competence is assessed throughout the programme. Learners must therefore attend all three days, participate fully and demonstrate the required adult, child and infant first aid skills themselves.

Where the additional catastrophic-bleeding module is included, learners must also successfully complete its practical assessment to receive the corresponding wording on their certificates.

Catastrophic Bleeding Training Included

DTMK normally includes the Qualsafe optional catastrophic-bleeding module as part of this combined course, unless an organisation specifically asks us not to include it.

The additional practical training covers:

  • Recognising life-threatening bleeding

  • Prioritising catastrophic bleeding within the primary survey

  • Applying direct pressure

  • Packing a deep wound

  • Using an improvised tourniquet

  • Applying a manufactured tourniquet

  • Recording and communicating the time of tourniquet application

  • Practical assessment of catastrophic-bleeding management

Learners practise wound packing and the application of improvised and manufactured tourniquets using appropriate training equipment. Tourniquets are not applied to other learners during training.

Learners who successfully complete the additional training and practical assessment receive wording on their Qualsafe certificates acknowledging these skills.

Approximately 30 minutes is added to the programme to deliver and assess this module properly. Organisations arranging training at their own venue should therefore confirm the complete daily timings with DTMK before making staff-cover or venue arrangements.

Who Is This Combined Course For?

This combined course is intended for people who may need to provide comprehensive first aid to both adults and children within the same workplace or organisation.

It may be particularly suitable for:

  • Schools and education settings

  • Early years and childcare providers

  • Children’s activity and holiday clubs

  • Sports clubs and coaching organisations

  • Community and voluntary organisations

  • Visitor attractions and leisure facilities

  • Charities working with adults and children

  • Organisations whose first aid needs assessment identifies a requirement for both First Aid at Work and Paediatric First Aid provision

The programme allows an organisation to train suitable employees for both workplace and paediatric first aid responsibilities without requiring them to attend two substantially overlapping courses separately.

The First Aid at Work content follows the relevant Health and Safety Executive training syllabus. The Paediatric First Aid content aligns with the Early Years Foundation Stage syllabus.

However, no single course is automatically appropriate for every organisation or role. Employers and regulated settings remain responsible for determining the number of first aiders required and the appropriate qualifications through their first aid needs assessment and any applicable statutory, contractual or sector-specific requirements.

If you are uncertain whether this combined course provides the qualifications your organisation requires, contact DTMK before booking. We can discuss your circumstances and help you identify the most appropriate training route.

Entry Requirements

Learners must be at least 14 years old on the first day of training.

There are no other formal entry requirements. However, Qualsafe strongly recommends that learners have a minimum of Level 1 literacy and numeracy, or an equivalent standard, because the course includes directed reading and two written multiple-choice assessments.

Learners must be able to perform the required practical skills at floor level. These include adult, child and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the practical management of unresponsive casualties.

Due to the practical nature of the course, learners should wear suitable clothing and flat footwear. Trousers are recommended so that learners can participate comfortably and safely in floor-level activities.

The course is delivered over three extended days and includes repeated practical activity. Learners must attend the complete programme and should arrive prepared to participate throughout each day.

Accessibility and Reasonable Adjustments

DTMK is committed to making training and assessment accessible wherever a reasonable adjustment is permitted.

Please tell us about any disability, injury, medical condition, learning need, language need or other circumstance that may affect participation as early as possible. Some adjustments require prior approval from Qualsafe, and supporting information may need to be submitted before the course.

Both qualifications require learners to demonstrate practical competence personally. To achieve the regulated awards, a learner must complete the required practical assessments without physical assistance from another person.

Reasonable adjustments may support how training or assessment is accessed, but they cannot remove or reduce the competence required by either qualification.

Learners who may find the directed reading or written assessments difficult should contact DTMK in confidence before the course. Permitted support or alternative assessment arrangements can then be considered in accordance with the Qualsafe requirements.

Renewing the Qualifications

Both qualifications are valid for 3 years.

Learners who continue to require both First Aid at Work and Paediatric First Aid should retake the complete combined course before their certificates expire.

Where only one qualification remains necessary, the learner may renew it separately:

  • First Aid at Work may be renewed through an appropriate two-day First Aid at Work requalification course, subject to the learner meeting the relevant certificate requirements

  • Paediatric First Aid may be renewed by completing the appropriate two-day Paediatric First Aid qualification

Employers and learners should monitor the expiry dates shown on both certificates and arrange renewal in sufficient time.

Once a First Aid at Work certificate has expired, the individual is no longer considered qualified to act as a workplace first aider.

Early years providers and other regulated settings must also ensure that paediatric first aid certificates remain current and that their arrangements continue to meet the requirements applicable to their setting and staff roles.

Qualsafe recommends annual refresher training to help first aiders maintain their basic skills and remain up to date with changes in first aid practice.

Arrange Combined First Aid Training at Your Own Venue

This combined course is particularly well suited to private delivery for organisations that need staff to provide comprehensive first aid to both adults and children.

DTMK can deliver the complete three-day programme at your workplace, school, childcare setting, sports club or another suitable venue for groups of up to 12 learners.
