Arrange Paediatric First Aid Refresher Training

It is an efficient way to refresh the skills of qualified paediatric first aiders together, with training arranged around your organisation’s operational requirements.
The course does not replace the learner’s main Paediatric First Aid qualification or Emergency Paediatric First Aid qualification. Learners must renew their primary qualification before its expiry date.

What Is the Paediatric First Aid Annual Refresher Qualification?
The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (Annual Refresher) (RQF) is a regulated qualification designed to help learners maintain their practical paediatric first aid skills between renewals of their main qualification.
The course provides three guided learning hours, with additional directed preparation or study contributing to a total qualification time of four hours.
Learners revisit the assessment of an emergency involving an infant or child and practise essential responses including CPR, use of an AED, the recovery position and treatment for choking.
The qualification is valid for one year. Qualsafe recommends completing annual refresher training each year, while the learner’s main Paediatric First Aid or Emergency Paediatric First Aid qualification must still be renewed before its three-year expiry date.
Who Is This Qualification For?
This qualification is predominantly intended for qualified paediatric first aiders who want to maintain their confidence, practise essential skills and keep up to date with current paediatric first aid procedures.

Employers and organisations remain responsible for deciding what first aid provision is required within their setting and whether this annual refresher is appropriate for each learner’s role.
The annual refresher supports continuing competence, but it does not replace the full Paediatric First Aid course, the blended Paediatric First Aid course or the renewal of any existing qualification.
What Does the Course Cover?
The course concentrates on practical skills that paediatric first aiders may need to use during an emergency involving an infant or child.
Learners will cover:

Assessing an emergency situation safely

Conducting a scene survey and primary survey

Summoning appropriate assistance

Recognising when an infant or child requires CPR

Performing infant and child CPR
-
Using an automated external defibrillator safely

Placing an infant or child into the recovery position

Continually monitoring normal breathing

Responding to a seizure
-
Recognising mild and severe choking
-
Providing first aid to a choking infant or child
The emphasis is on active participation, practical demonstration and the repeated practice of essential paediatric first aid skills.
Practical Training and Assessment
This is a practical classroom course in which learners take an active part in demonstrations, guided practice and realistic first aid scenarios.
Learners practise with infant and child resuscitation manikins, AED training equipment and suitable choking training aids. Skills are developed through repeated practice, feedback and correction from the trainer.
Assessment takes place throughout the course through four practical assessments. Learners must demonstrate the required skills safely and effectively to achieve the qualification.
There is no multiple-choice examination for this qualification.
To protect the quality of training and provide sufficient opportunities for practice and assessment, the maximum class size is 12 learners for each trainer.
Course Duration and Entry Requirements
The qualification includes three guided learning hours delivered in the classroom, plus one hour of directed preparation or study. Its total qualification time is four hours.
Learners must:

Be at least 14 years old on the first day of training

Be physically able to take part in practical activities at floor level

Wear suitable clothing and flat footwear for practical training
There are no other formal entry requirements. However, the qualification is predominantly intended for people who already hold responsibility for providing paediatric first aid and want to refresh their practical skills.
Please tell DTMK before booking if a learner may require reasonable adjustments or additional support during training or assessment.
Annual Refresher Training or Full Requalification?
Annual refresher training helps paediatric first aiders maintain their basic skills and keep up to date with changes in first aid procedures during the validity of their main certificate.
It does not renew, replace or extend a Paediatric First Aid or Emergency Paediatric First Aid qualification.
The Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework states that providers should consider whether paediatric first aiders need annual refresher training during the three-year certification period.
Learners must still renew their main paediatric first aid qualification before it expires. Depending on the responsibilities of the learner and the requirements of their setting, this may mean completing:
Employers and early years providers are responsible for determining which qualification and refresher arrangements are appropriate for each role and setting.
Qualification and Certification
Learners who successfully complete all required practical assessments will receive the:
Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (Annual Refresher) (RQF)
This is an Ofqual regulated qualification and the certificate is valid for one year. Qualsafe certificates can be checked using the awarding organisation’s online certificate verification service.
The annual refresher certificate records the learner’s achievement of this qualification. It does not alter the expiry date of their main Paediatric First Aid or Emergency Paediatric First Aid certificate.
To maintain the recommended sequence of training, learners should complete annual refresher training each year and renew their primary paediatric first aid qualification before its three-year expiry date.
Hands-On Paediatric First Aid Practice
First aid skills are difficult to maintain through theory alone. This refresher course gives learners time to practise essential techniques and receive direct feedback from an experienced trainer.
Learners work with infant and child resuscitation manikins, AED training equipment and suitable choking training aids. Practical scenarios help them revisit the differences between responding to emergencies involving babies and older children.
The session is designed to identify skills that have faded, correct technique where necessary and rebuild confidence through repeated practice.
You can also meet some of the training manikins used by DTMK before attending your course.
Optional Catastrophic Bleeding Training
By prior arrangement, this course can include an additional 30-minute practical session covering the management of life-threatening catastrophic bleeding.
Learners practise a step-by-step approach to bleeding control, including:

Packing a deep wound

Applying an improvised tourniquet

Applying a manufactured tourniquet
DTMK uses realistic wound-packing models and dedicated training equipment to make this a practical, hands-on session.
Learners who complete the optional training and practical assessment will have additional wording included on their Qualsafe certificate to acknowledge these skills.
This optional element extends the course beyond the standard three guided learning hours and must be agreed when arranging the training.
