Interested in This Course?
This two-day First Aid at Work requalification course can be arranged privately for eligible learners at your organisation’s own suitable venue.
Contact DTMK to discuss your location, learner numbers, preferred dates and existing First Aid at Work certificates. We will confirm that learners are eligible for the shortened requalification route before the booking is finalised.
Learners must provide evidence of a current or accepted recently expired First Aid at Work certificate. Anyone who is not eligible for requalification will need to complete the full three-day First Aid at Work course.

What Is First Aid at Work Requalification?
First Aid at Work requalification is the shortened classroom route through which eligible first aiders can renew the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF).
The course recognises that learners have previously completed First Aid at Work training. It revisits the full qualification syllabus at a faster pace, allowing learners to refresh their knowledge, update their first aid practice and demonstrate that they continue to meet the required standard.
Training is delivered face to face over two days, with at least 12 hours of guided learning excluding breaks. Practical activities, trainer-led demonstrations, scenario-based practice and formal assessments are completed in the classroom.
Learners who successfully complete all required training and assessments receive the same regulated Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) as learners completing the full three-day route. The certificate is valid for three years.
How the First Aid at Work Requalification Course Works
The requalification route contains at least 12 hours of face-to-face training and assessment, delivered across two classroom days. Breaks are additional to these training hours.
The course covers the same two mandatory units as the full First Aid at Work qualification:
-
Emergency First Aid in the Workplace
-
Recognition and Management of Illness and Injury in the Workplace
Because learners have completed First Aid at Work training previously, the syllabus is revisited at a faster pace than on the initial three-day course. Trainer-led teaching, demonstrations, practical exercises and realistic scenarios are used to refresh existing knowledge and update first aid practice.
Practical assessments are completed throughout both days. Learners also complete one multiple-choice question paper at the end of each unit.
All required training and assessments are completed face to face. Learners must attend the complete course and successfully achieve both units to renew their qualification.
What Does the Requalification Course Cover?
The course revisits the knowledge and practical skills required to respond to workplace injuries and medical emergencies.
Emergency First Aid in the Workplace
-
Roles and responsibilities of a workplace first aider
-
Infection prevention, consent and incident reporting
-
Assessing an incident and conducting a primary survey
-
Summoning appropriate assistance
-
Managing an unresponsive casualty
-
The recovery position and seizure management
-
Adult CPR and safe use of an AED
-
Recognising and treating choking
-
External bleeding and hypovolaemic shock
-
Minor injuries, including cuts, grazes, bruises, splinters, nosebleeds and minor burns
Recognition and Management of Illness and Injury
-
Poisoning
-
Asthma and hyperventilation
-
Anaphylaxis
-
Chest injuries
-
Heart attack and angina
-
Stroke
-
Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
-
Head and spinal injuries
-
Epilepsy and diabetes
-
Conducting a secondary survey
-
Eye injuries
-
Burns and scalds
The shortened timetable assumes that learners are already familiar with the First Aid at Work syllabus. It is designed to refresh, update and reassess existing competence rather than teach every subject for the first time.
Catastrophic Bleeding Training Included
DTMK includes the Qualsafe catastrophic bleeding module as a standard part of this First Aid at Work requalification course.
The additional practical training covers:
-
Recognising life-threatening catastrophic bleeding
-
Wound packing
-
Using an improvised tourniquet
-
Applying a manufactured tourniquet
-
Practical assessment of catastrophic-bleeding management
Learners who successfully complete the additional training and practical assessment receive wording on their Qualsafe certificate acknowledging these skills.
Approximately 30 minutes is added to the overall course duration so that the module can be taught, practised and assessed properly. Organisations arranging private training should therefore confirm the complete course timings with DTMK before making staff-cover or venue arrangements.

Who Is This Requalification Course For?
This course is intended for people who have previously completed First Aid at Work training and need to renew their qualification.
It is suitable for designated workplace first aiders who continue to have responsibility for responding to a range of injuries and medical emergencies at work. It may also be appropriate for people providing first aid through voluntary or community activities.
The two-day route is designed for experienced learners who remain familiar with the First Aid at Work syllabus and can work at the faster pace required for requalification.
Learners must provide an accepted current or recently expired First Aid at Work certificate before attending. Anyone completing First Aid at Work training for the first time must undertake the full three-day course instead.
Entry and Requalification Requirements
Learners must:
-
Be at least 14 years old on the first day of training
-
Be able to perform practical first aid activities at floor level
-
Provide a current or previously issued, recently expired First Aid at Work certificate in a format accepted by HSE
-
Attend the complete course and participate in all required assessments
Qualsafe recommends that learners have at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy, or an equivalent standard.
Because the course is practical, learners should wear suitable clothing and flat footwear.
Learners should requalify before their existing certificate expires. Once a First Aid at Work certificate has expired, the individual is no longer considered competent to act as a workplace first aider.
Where a previous certificate expired more than one month before the requalification course, the syllabus will still be delivered at the shortened and faster requalification pace. HSE advises that completing the full three-day First Aid at Work course may be more appropriate in these circumstances.
DTMK will review the learner’s previous certificate and discuss the appropriate training route before confirming their place.
Accessibility and Reasonable Adjustments
DTMK aims to make training accessible while maintaining the assessment standards required for this regulated qualification.
Please tell us about any disability, medical condition, learning need or other accessibility requirement before the course. This gives us time to discuss suitable support and arrange permitted reasonable adjustments where appropriate.
Learners must still demonstrate all required practical first aid skills safely and effectively. These include performing CPR at floor level, placing a casualty into the recovery position and completing the other practical assessments.
Support may be available for learners who experience difficulty reading or completing the written multiple-choice papers. Where permitted, the papers may be administered verbally in accordance with the Qualsafe reasonable-adjustment requirements.
Reasonable adjustments cannot remove or alter an essential assessment criterion, but we will work with learners and organisations to identify suitable support wherever possible.
