Is This the Right Clinical Course for Me?

This qualification is intended for people working or preparing to work in clinical-practice environments. Learners do not need to be registered healthcare professionals. Reception, administration, support and other non-clinical staff may also require appropriate emergency training.

It may be relevant to people working in:

  • GP and primary-care services

  • Dental practices

  • Pharmacies

  • Aesthetics clinics

  • Physiotherapy and podiatry services

  • Nursing and care homes

  • Community health centres

  • Mental health services

  • Addiction services

  • Sexual-health services

  • Sports-medicine environments

  • Other clinical-practice settings

This all-ages qualification is appropriate where staff may need to provide basic life support to adults, children or infants and where management of anaphylaxis forms part of the organisation’s identified training requirement.

It can provide an important part of an organisation’s medical-emergency training arrangements, including CPR, AED use, unconscious casualty management, choking and anaphylaxis. However, it may not represent all the training required for every role or clinical setting.

Part of Your Wider Emergency Arrangements

Clinical settings can have additional requirements depending on:

  • The services and procedures they provide

  • The ages and needs of their patients

  • The responsibilities and scope of practice of individual staff

  • The emergency medicines and equipment available

  • Organisational emergency procedures

  • Team roles and simulation requirements

  • Current professional guidance

  • Risk assessment and clinical-governance arrangements

This course is a Basic Life Support qualification. It is not Advanced Life Support, Immediate Life Support or a hospital crash-team course. It does not cover cardiac-rhythm interpretation, manual defibrillation, advanced airway procedures or general emergency-drug administration.

GP and Primary-Care Services

This qualification can provide the BLS, CPR, AED and prescribed anaphylaxis component of training for relevant primary-care staff.

GP practices may also require additional training relating to other medical emergencies, emergency medicines, oxygen, deteriorating patients, equipment, team roles and practice-specific procedures.

The practice should determine the complete training required for each staff group through current guidance, risk assessment and its clinical-governance arrangements.

Dental Practices

This qualification can provide part of a dental practice’s resuscitation-training arrangements, including adult, child and infant CPR, AED use, choking and anaphylaxis management.

It is not a complete dental medical-emergencies course and does not cover every emergency medicine, team simulation or role-specific competence that may apply in primary dental care. Different or additional requirements may also apply where conscious sedation is undertaken.

Dental practices should assess their complete requirements against current professional guidance and clinical-governance arrangements.

Other Clinical and Specialist Settings

Inpatient services, care providers, aesthetics clinics and organisations undertaking specialist or invasive procedures should determine whether staff require additional medical-emergency, equipment, medicines or role-specific training alongside this qualification.

The appropriate training must be selected by the organisation responsible for the learner’s role and clinical governance.

Achievement confirms that the learner has completed this qualification’s prescribed learning and assessment requirements. It does not provide a licence to practise, extend a learner’s professional scope of practice or establish that every training requirement of their organisation has been met.

If you are uncertain whether this qualification provides all or part of the training your staff require, contact DTMK before booking.

A live adrenaline auto-injector is not used during practical training.

Additional Clinical Adrenaline Skills

Where these skills fall within a learner’s scope of practice, the course may additionally include simulated drawing up of the appropriate dose of adrenaline 1:1000 for intramuscular administration and safe disposal of sharps.

This additional activity must:

  • Be relevant to the learner’s established scope of practice

  • Reflect the clinical-governance requirements of the learner’s organisation

  • Use appropriate simulation equipment

  • Include safe disposal of sharps

  • Follow applicable current dosage guidance

Refreshing or assessing these skills does not provide a licence to practise or extend the learner’s existing scope of practice.

Please contact DTMK before attending if you or your organisation requires this additional clinical activity.
