Which First Aid Course Do I Need? A Guide to DTMK Courses in Milton Keynes
Updated: Sep 3
Choosing a first aid course can be confusing. Several qualifications have similar names, but they are intended for different workplaces, responsibilities and groups of learners. The right choice depends on why you need training, who you may need to help and whether you require a regulated qualification.
DTMK provides practical first aid courses for workplaces, childcare and education settings, clinical teams, community groups, families and individuals. Courses are available at our training centre in Milton Keynes, with private training also available for organisations at their own venue.
This guide will help you find the right type of training before you compare individual courses. If you already know what you need, you can also view our upcoming first aid courses in Milton Keynes.
Explore Training by Course Type
The quickest way to find suitable training is to begin with the reason you need it.
Workplace First Aid Courses
Our workplace first aid courses are for employers, employees and people appointed to provide first aid at work.
The range includes:
Emergency First Aid at Work
First Aid at Work
First Aid at Work Requalification
First Aid at Work Annual Refresher
Forestry First Aid
Administering Emergency Oxygen
Employers should select their level of first aid provision after completing a suitable first aid needs assessment. The size of the workforce matters, but it is not the only consideration. Workplace hazards, previous incidents, shift patterns, travel, lone working and the distance from emergency medical assistance may all affect what is required.
If you are unsure, you can use the Qualsafe First Aid Requirements Calculator as a starting point or contact DTMK for guidance.
Paediatric First Aid Courses
Our paediatric first aid courses are designed for people responsible for babies and children.
These courses may be appropriate for:
Nursery and preschool practitioners
Childminders
School and wraparound-care staff
People working in children’s activities
Parents and family members
Organisations responsible for both children and adults
Options include Emergency Paediatric First Aid, the full Paediatric First Aid qualification, annual refresher training and combined workplace and paediatric courses.
Requirements can vary according to the learner’s role and the type of setting. If your course is needed for employment or regulatory compliance, check exactly which qualification your employer or setting requires before booking.
Blended First Aid Courses
Blended first aid courses combine online study with face-to-face practical training and assessment.
At DTMK, blended options are available for:
Emergency First Aid at Work
First Aid at Work
First Aid at Work Requalification
Paediatric First Aid
Blended learning can reduce the amount of time spent in the classroom, but it does not turn first aid into a completely online course. Learners must complete the required online learning before attending the practical session. Practical skills and competence are still taught and assessed in person.
It can be a useful choice for busy learners and organisations, while people who prefer to learn entirely with a trainer can still choose traditional classroom delivery.
Clinical Basic Life Support Training
Our clinical BLS training is intended for healthcare personnel and people working in clinical environments.
This may include people working in:
Dental practices
GP and healthcare services
Pharmacies
Physiotherapy and podiatry
Aesthetics and associated clinical services
Care and other health-related settings
Available subjects include Basic Life Support, the use of an automated external defibrillator, anaphylaxis and emergency oxygen. Courses can cover adults only or adults, children and infants, depending on the qualification selected.
Clinical learners should check the requirements of their employer, professional body or workplace before booking. The most appropriate course depends on the patients they work with and the responsibilities included in their role.
Community First Aid and CPR Courses
Our community first aid and CPR courses are for people who want useful emergency skills outside a conventional workplace qualification.
They can be suitable for:
Parents and family members
Community organisations
Volunteers
Sports and activity groups
Young people
People who want to learn CPR and AED use
Anyone who wants to feel more prepared for an emergency
Community training can focus on essential subjects such as CPR, choking, AED use, severe bleeding and anaphylaxis. DTMK also offers broader and more specialist options, including Activity First Aid, citizenAID, Family First Aid and First Aid for Young People.
These courses are particularly useful when a group wants training matched to its activities rather than a general workplace qualification.
If resuscitation is your main priority, our guide to choosing CPR and defibrillator training explains the differences between adult, all-ages and anaphylaxis courses.
If you would like to develop a broader range of practical skills, our First Aid Essentials course covers common first aid situations and helps learners feel more confident responding to emergencies at home, at work or in the community.
Education and Training
Our education and training courses are for people who want to develop their ability to teach or deliver training.
The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Education and Training is an introductory teaching qualification. It can be relevant to new trainers, workplace instructors and subject specialists who want to move into teaching.
Holding an education and training qualification does not automatically qualify someone to teach every subject. Trainers must also have suitable knowledge, competence and any qualifications required within their own specialist area.
Safeguarding Training
Our safeguarding courses help learners understand how to recognise and respond to concerns involving children, young people or adults at risk.
Safeguarding training may be relevant to people working in education, healthcare, community organisations, sports, care services and other positions of trust. The appropriate level should reflect the person’s role and responsibilities.
Which Workplace First Aid Course Should I Choose?
Emergency First Aid at Work and First Aid at Work are not interchangeable names for the same course.
Emergency First Aid at Work provides the essential skills needed to respond to a range of workplace emergencies. It is often selected for lower-risk environments or where a first aid needs assessment identifies this level of provision as appropriate.
First Aid at Work provides broader training over three classroom days. It covers a wider range of illnesses and injuries and may be more appropriate for workplaces with greater hazards, larger or more complex staffing arrangements, or needs that cannot be met by the emergency qualification alone.
A First Aid at Work Annual Refresher helps qualified first aiders practise important skills between full qualification courses. It does not extend the expiry date of an existing qualification.
First Aid at Work Requalification is for eligible learners renewing their First Aid at Work qualification. Do not leave renewal until the last moment: eligibility and the correct course route can be affected when a certificate expires.
If you are booking on behalf of an employer, begin with the workplace’s first aid needs assessment rather than choosing solely by course duration or price.
Courses You Can Attend at Our Milton Keynes Training Centre
DTMK runs selected public courses at our own training centre, allowing individuals and smaller numbers of employees to book places without arranging a private group.
The principal courses currently promoted through our centre booking page include:
Emergency First Aid at Work
This is one of our main centre-based courses. It is a practical, regulated one-day qualification for learners who need emergency workplace first aid skills.
Training includes responding to an incident, assessing a casualty, CPR, safe AED use, choking, an unresponsive casualty, seizures, wounds, bleeding and shock. DTMK also includes catastrophic bleeding awareness and practical training as standard.
First Aid at Work
Our three-day First Aid at Work course is available for people requiring the broader workplace qualification. It develops practical skills across a wider range of workplace injuries and medical conditions.
The course includes practical activities, realistic scenarios and assessment throughout the programme. Because this is a multi-day course, an advertised date may show the first day or the complete date range. Always read the individual booking information and make sure you can attend every required day.
Community BLS, AED and Anaphylaxis
This centre-based course is for people who want practical Basic Life Support, AED and anaphylaxis training covering adults, children and infants.
It may be helpful for families, volunteers, activity leaders and members of the public who want more than a very brief CPR demonstration but do not require a clinical version of the qualification.
Clinical BLS, AED and Anaphylaxis
This course provides practical clinical Basic Life Support, AED and anaphylaxis training covering adults, children and infants. It is intended for clinical personnel who need training relevant to healthcare practice.
Learners should confirm that the course content and qualification meet the requirements of their employer or professional role before booking.
Our public schedule changes as new dates are released. If the course or date you need is not shown, contact DTMK rather than assuming that it is unavailable. We may be able to add a date, advise you about the next planned session or arrange private training.
Public Courses or Private Training?
A public course at the DTMK centre is often the simplest choice for an individual or an organisation booking a small number of places. You select an available date and join other learners attending the same programme.
Private training can be more practical when an organisation has a larger team, particular scheduling requirements or a suitable venue of its own. It can reduce employee travel and allow course arrangements to reflect the organisation’s working environment.
DTMK can deliver private training for organisations in Milton Keynes and surrounding areas. Depending on the course and group, training may take place at your premises or at our centre.

Real World Examples
The following examples show why the reason for training matters more than simply choosing the shortest course.
A Small Office Needs Workplace First Aiders
A small office may identify Emergency First Aid at Work as suitable after completing its first aid needs assessment. However, the employer should still consider absence, annual leave, hybrid working and whether trained cover will be available whenever people are at work.
Having one named first aider is not sufficient if that person is regularly absent from the workplace.
A Nursery Employee Needs Paediatric Training
A nursery employee should not assume that an ordinary workplace first aid course will satisfy the requirements of an early-years role. Emergency Paediatric First Aid and the full Paediatric First Aid qualification are different courses.
The learner should confirm the precise requirement with the nursery or employer before booking.
A Dental Team Needs Annual Clinical Training
A dental or healthcare team may require Basic Life Support and medical-emergency training appropriate to clinical practice. A general community CPR class may teach valuable skills but may not satisfy the organisation’s professional or workplace requirements.
The practice should establish which ages, subjects and certification its team needs before selecting a clinical BLS course.
A Parent Wants Confidence in an Emergency
A parent may not require a workplace qualification at all. Community or family-focused training may provide a more relevant introduction to CPR, choking, AED use and other emergencies involving adults, children or babies.
The best course is the one that matches the situations the learner is preparing for.
One Employee Has Two Responsibilities
Someone working in a childcare setting may have responsibilities involving both workplace colleagues and children. Completing only one type of first aid training may not cover both needs.
DTMK offers combined workplace and paediatric courses for situations where both qualification areas are required. The employer should still confirm that the combined option matches the learner’s responsibilities.
First Aid Courses in Milton Keynes and Surrounding Areas
DTMK Training Services is based in Milton Keynes and provides training for individuals and organisations from Bletchley, across Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas.
Centre-based learners benefit from a dedicated training environment, practical equipment and opportunities to practise rather than simply watching demonstrations. Our training uses adult, child and infant manikins where relevant, along with AED trainers and other equipment appropriate to the course.
Practical learning matters because knowing what CPR looks like is not the same as performing it. Learners need an opportunity to practise their positioning, sequence, technique and decision-making with guidance from a trainer.
Local organisations can also request private training for their teams. This can be particularly helpful when releasing several employees to attend separate public dates would be difficult.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which first aid course my workplace needs?
Your employer should complete a first aid needs assessment. This should consider workplace hazards, workforce size, working patterns, previous incidents, vulnerable people, travel, lone working and access to emergency assistance.
Do not choose a course solely because another organisation of a similar size selected it. Its risks and working arrangements may be different.
Is Emergency First Aid at Work the same as First Aid at Work?
No. Emergency First Aid at Work is a shorter qualification focusing on essential emergency responses. First Aid at Work is a broader three-day qualification covering a wider range of injuries and medical conditions.
Your workplace needs assessment should help determine which is appropriate.
Can first aid training be completed entirely online?
A regulated first aid qualification requiring practical competence cannot simply be completed through online videos. Blended courses allow an approved part of the learning to be completed online, followed by mandatory face-to-face practical training and assessment.
Can individuals book a course at DTMK?
Yes. Individuals can book places on the public courses shown on our Milton Keynes course booking page. Organisations can also book places for individual employees.
If the required course is not currently listed, contact us to ask about planned dates.
Can DTMK train our whole team?
Yes. Private training can be arranged for organisations, subject to the course, group size and availability. Training may be possible at your organisation’s suitable venue or at the DTMK centre.
Visit our training for organisations page to explore the available options.
What happens if I book the wrong course?
Contact DTMK as soon as possible and explain why you need the training. We can help you compare the options, although it remains the responsibility of the learner or employer to confirm any professional, regulatory or workplace requirement.
Asking before the course is much easier than discovering afterwards that a different qualification was needed.
Summary
DTMK offers several types of training because learners do not all have the same responsibilities.
Workplace courses support employers and designated first aiders. Paediatric courses focus on emergencies involving babies and children. Clinical BLS training is designed for healthcare environments, while community courses make practical emergency skills available to families, volunteers and the public. Blended learning provides a more flexible route where it is available, and DTMK also offers education, training and safeguarding qualifications.
Begin by choosing the relevant course category. Then compare the individual qualifications, delivery methods and certification requirements within it.
If you need a public course, check our current centre dates. If you are arranging training for a team or cannot see a suitable date, contact DTMK to discuss the alternatives.
