A Professional Qualification for Teachers and Trainers

The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Education and Training (RQF) is a nationally recognised, Ofqual-regulated qualification for people beginning or developing a role in teaching or training.

It introduces the professional responsibilities involved in planning, delivering and assessing inclusive learning. Learners explore how to create supportive learning environments, respond to different needs, communicate effectively and evaluate their own teaching practice.

DTMK delivers this qualification face-to-face for pre-arranged groups. Training can take place at our Milton Keynes venue or at a suitable venue provided by the organisation.

This Is Not a First Aid Trainer Course

The Level 3 Award in Education and Training is a broad professional teaching and training qualification. It is not a First Aid Trainer course and it does not automatically qualify somebody to deliver regulated first aid qualifications.

Learners apply the principles of education and training to their own subject specialism. This might be workplace learning, healthcare, social care, construction, hospitality, public services, professional development or another area in which they have suitable knowledge and experience.

Some learners may eventually use the qualification as part of the evidence required for a specialist trainer role. However, individual sectors and awarding organisations can impose additional requirements relating to subject competence, occupational experience, assessing qualifications and trainer approval.

Not sure whether your role requires a formal teaching qualification? Read our guide: Do You Need a Teaching Qualification to Deliver Workplace Training?

Available for Pre-Arranged Groups

DTMK offers this qualification to employers, training organisations and other established groups. It is not currently offered as an open course for individual online booking.

The programme is delivered face-to-face over five training days for groups of up to 12 learners. Training can take place at DTMK’s venue in Milton Keynes or at a suitable venue provided by the organisation.

Course dates are agreed with the commissioning organisation. The five days may be arranged around operational needs, subject to DTMK confirming a delivery schedule that meets all qualification and assessment requirements.

Course Content: Units 1, 2 and 3

DTMK delivers the approved Units 1, 2 and 3 route. Every learner completing the DTMK programme follows the same three units. Together, they introduce the professional responsibilities of a teacher or trainer, the practical principles of inclusive teaching and the effective assessment of learning.

Unit 1: Understanding Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in Education and Training

This unit establishes the professional foundations of teaching and training. Learners examine the responsibilities attached to the role and consider how legislation, regulatory requirements and relevant codes of practice affect their work.

The unit explores equality, diversity and the importance of identifying and responding to individual learner needs. Learners consider how trainers can establish a safe and supportive environment, promote appropriate behaviour and encourage respect between everyone involved in learning.

Teaching and training rarely take place in isolation. Learners therefore examine how trainers work with colleagues and other professionals, where the boundaries of the teaching role lie and when somebody should be referred to another source of specialist support.

By completing this unit, learners develop an understanding of:

  • The teaching role and its professional responsibilities

  • Legislation, regulatory requirements and codes of practice

  • Promoting equality and valuing diversity

  • Identifying and meeting individual learner needs

  • Maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment

  • Encouraging appropriate behaviour and mutual respect

  • Working appropriately with other professionals

  • Professional boundaries and points of referral

Unit 2: Understanding and Using Inclusive Teaching and Learning Approaches

This unit moves from professional responsibilities into the practical planning and delivery of learning. Learners explore what inclusive teaching means and compare different teaching approaches within their own area of specialism.

They consider how teaching methods, learning resources and assessment activities can be selected and adapted to meet individual needs. The unit also examines learner motivation, effective communication, appropriate ground rules and opportunities to develop English, mathematics, digital and wider transferable skills.

Learners must devise an inclusive teaching and learning plan and explain the decisions behind it. They then put those principles into practice through their microteaching, using suitable approaches, resources and assessment methods.

Constructive feedback and reflective practice are central to the unit. Learners consider how well their session met its objectives, evaluate the effectiveness of their delivery and identify ways to improve their future teaching.

By completing this unit, learners develop their ability to:

  • Recognise the features of inclusive teaching and learning

  • Compare the strengths and limitations of different teaching approaches

  • Select methods, resources and assessments that respond to individual needs

  • Engage and motivate learners

  • Establish appropriate expectations and ground rules

  • Plan an inclusive teaching and learning session

  • Communicate in ways that support different learners

  • Use assessment during teaching to check learning

  • Give constructive feedback

  • Evaluate their own delivery and identify improvements

Unit 3: Understanding Assessment in Education and Training

Assessment is an essential part of effective teaching. This unit explores why assessment is used, how different assessment methods work and how trainers can select approaches that are appropriate for the subject, setting and individual learner.

Learners compare the strengths and limitations of different methods and consider how assessment may be adapted to meet individual needs. They also examine the value of involving learners in the process through methods such as peer assessment and self-assessment.

The unit considers the relationship between assessment and constructive feedback, including how feedback can help learners recognise progress and understand what they need to do next.

Learners also examine the importance of accurate assessment records and the organisational requirements that may govern how those records are created, stored and used.

By completing this unit, learners develop an understanding of:

  • The purposes of different types of assessment

  • The characteristics of different assessment methods

  • The strengths and limitations of assessment approaches

  • Adapting assessment to meet individual learner needs

  • Involving learners and others in assessment

  • Peer assessment and self-assessment

  • Giving useful and constructive feedback

  • Maintaining appropriate assessment records

DTMK does not currently deliver the alternative Unit 4 route. There is therefore no optional-unit selection when arranging this programme with DTMK.

How Learners Are Assessed

This is an assessed professional qualification rather than an attendance-only course. Learners must successfully complete written assessments and practical microteaching before the qualification can be awarded.

Three Learner Workbooks

Each learner must complete three Qualsafe learner workbooks - one for each unit of the qualification.

The workbooks require learners to explain their understanding, consider professional practice and apply the course content to education or training situations. They are not short multiple-choice tests. Learners should expect to produce developed written responses that address all the relevant assessment criteria.

Workbook activities may be introduced and supported during the face-to-face programme, but learners will also need to undertake independent study and complete written work outside the classroom days.

Independent Study and Assessment Time

The qualification has 120 hours of Total Qualification Time. This comprises 48 Guided Learning Hours together with approximately 72 hours of directed preparation, private study and assessment activity.

Organisations and learners should therefore plan for the course commitment to extend beyond attendance on the five face-to-face training days. DTMK will explain the submission arrangements and the timescales by which assessment work must be returned.

Authenticity and Academic Integrity

Every learner must complete and submit their own work. Answers should demonstrate the learner’s own understanding and should be informed by the training, their reading and their relevant experience.

Plagiarism, collusion, copying another person’s work or the inappropriate use of generative artificial intelligence may constitute learner malpractice. Learners completing workbook assessments must accept the relevant learner agreement and plagiarism warning before beginning their assessed work.

Sources should be acknowledged where appropriate. DTMK will explain the required approach and provide guidance about completing and submitting the workbooks.

Practical Microteaching Assessment

Each learner must plan and deliver a teaching session lasting at least 15 minutes. The session is observed and assessed by a member of the delivery team.

Learners must also produce a session plan, use appropriate teaching and assessment approaches, and evaluate their delivery. The evaluation should reflect on the effectiveness of the session and consider feedback provided by the trainer and other learners.

Every learner must be involved in at least one hour of microteaching. In addition to delivering their own assessed session, this may include observing other learners and participating appropriately in feedback and evaluation.

Achieving the Qualification

Attendance on all five training days does not by itself guarantee achievement. Learners must meet the assessment requirements for all three units, complete the required microteaching activity and submit all assessment documentation within the agreed timescales.

Where submitted work does not yet meet the required standard, DTMK will provide appropriate assessment feedback and explain what further evidence or revision is required. All outstanding requirements must be completed within the permitted qualification registration period.

Who Is This Qualification For?

The Level 3 Award in Education and Training is suitable for people who are preparing to teach or train, as well as those who have recently begun delivering learning and want to develop a stronger professional foundation.

It may be appropriate for workplace trainers, vocational instructors, learning and development staff, subject specialists, internal trainers and people supporting learning within private, public or voluntary-sector organisations.

Learners do not need to hold a teaching or training position before beginning the course. However, they should have suitable knowledge or experience in the subject they intend to use when planning and delivering their microteaching session.

Entry Requirements

Learners must be at least 19 years old on the first day of training.

There are no other formal qualification entry requirements. However, learners should possess suitable knowledge, experience or qualifications in the subject they intend to teach or train.

Qualsafe advises that learners should have English skills at approximately Level 2. The programme involves reading, written workbook assessments, lesson planning, discussion and the delivery of a teaching session.

DTMK will discuss any learning, communication, accessibility or other support requirements before the course. This allows reasonable adjustments and appropriate support to be considered in accordance with the qualification requirements.

Face-to-Face Training at Your Venue or Ours

Organisations can arrange the course at DTMK’s training venue in Milton Keynes or ask us to deliver it at their own suitable premises.

A customer venue must provide a safe and appropriate learning environment with sufficient space, seating and writing surfaces for the group. It must also have suitable lighting, heating, ventilation, toilet facilities, accessible exits, appropriate access arrangements and freedom from distracting noise.

Suitable presentation facilities and teaching resources will also be required. DTMK will discuss the proposed room, accessibility requirements and available equipment with the organisation before confirming delivery.
