Renew Your First Aid at Work Qualification Through Blended Learning
The blended First Aid at Work requalification course provides eligible existing first aiders with a more flexible way to renew their Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF).

Learners complete approximately 6 hours of approved e-learning before attending one full day of face-to-face classroom training and assessment.

Requalification and blended learning do not result in a different or reduced qualification. Learners who successfully complete all required training and assessments receive the same regulated Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF), valid for 3 years.

The shortened requalification route recognises that learners have previously completed First Aid at Work training and are returning to refresh, update and demonstrate their knowledge and practical competence.
The e-learning must be completed in full before the classroom session. All required practical assessments and both multiple-choice question papers are completed face to face.

How the Blended Requalification Course Works
The course is divided into two compulsory elements:
-
Approximately 6 hours of approved e-learning completed before the classroom session
-
One 6-hour face-to-face classroom day containing trainer-led learning, practical skills development and assessment

The e-learning is not an optional introduction. It must be completed in full before the learner attends the classroom day.

Learners must also attend the entire face-to-face session and successfully complete every required practical and written assessment to achieve the qualification.

This route reduces the time experienced first aiders spend away from the workplace while retaining a full day of practical training and assessment with an approved trainer.

DTMK normally includes Qualsafe’s optional catastrophic-bleeding training and practical assessment. Approximately 30 additional minutes isadded to the classroom day to deliver and assess this module properly.
What Is Covered Online?
The e-learning refreshes and develops knowledge from across the First Aid at Work syllabus, including:
-
The role and responsibilities of a first aider
-
Infection control, consent, first aid equipment and incident reporting
-
Incident and casualty assessment
-
The primary and secondary surveys
-
Recognising and managing hypoxia
-
Epilepsy and seizures
-
Diabetes
-
Asthma and the respiratory system
-
Hyperventilation
-
Burns and scalds, including electrical and chemical burns
-
Eye injuries
-
Poisoning
-
Anaphylaxis
-
Chest injuries
-
The circulatory system
-
Heart conditions, including angina and heart attack
-
Stroke
-
Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
-
Suspected spinal injuries

The classroom session revisits and develops relevant knowledge while concentrating on practical application, skills practice and assessment.

Completion of the e-learning does not replace the classroom training or assessment. It must be completed in full before the learner is eligible to attend the face-to-face session.
What Happens During the Classroom Day?
The face-to-face session builds on the completed e-learning. Learners refresh, practise and demonstrate the practical skills required by the qualification.

The classroom programme includes:
-
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and safe AED use
-
Assessing and managing an unresponsive casualty
-
The recovery position and continual monitoring
-
Responding to seizures
-
Responding to a choking casualty
-
Managing external bleeding and shock
-
Minor injuries, including cuts, grazes, bruises, splinters, minor burns, scalds and nosebleeds
-
Managing fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
-
Applying support and elevated slings
-
Recognising and managing suspected head and spinal injuries
-
The jaw-thrust technique and manual in-line stabilisation
-
Conducting a secondary survey and head-to-toe examination
-
Recognising and managing anaphylaxis
-
Using an adrenaline auto-injector training device
-
Completing all required practical assessments
-
Completing both multiple-choice question papers

DTMK also normally includes practical catastrophic-bleeding training covering wound packing and the application of improvised and manufactured tourniquets.
How Is the Course Assessed?
All assessments take place during the face-to-face classroom session. The e-learning prepares learners for the classroom training and assessment but does not contribute towards their final mark.

Learners must successfully complete seven practical assessments covering:
-
CPR and the safe use of an automated external defibrillator
-
Managing an unresponsive casualty
-
Responding to a choking casualty
-
Managing wounds, bleeding and shock
-
Conducting a secondary survey
-
Managing fractures and suspected spinal injuries
-
Managing anaphylaxis
Learners must also complete two multiple-choice question papers under assessment conditions:
-
Emergency First Aid in the Workplace: 15 questions, with a minimum pass mark of 11
-
Recognition and Management of Illness and Injury in the Workplace: 25 questions, with a minimum pass mark of 18

The qualification is graded Pass or Fail. Every mandatory practical assessment and both written assessments must be completed successfully for the qualification to be awarded.
Practical competence is assessed during the classroom day. Learners must therefore participate fully and demonstrate the required practical skills themselves.
Catastrophic Bleeding Training Included
DTMK includes the Qualsafe optional catastrophic-bleeding module as standard on this blended First Aid at Work requalification course, unless an organisation specifically asks us not to include it.

The additional practical training covers:
-
Recognising life-threatening bleeding
-
Applying direct pressure
-
Wound packing
-
Using an improvised tourniquet
-
Applying a manufactured tourniquet
-
Practical assessment of catastrophic-bleeding management

Learners who successfully complete the additional training and practical assessment receive wording on their Qualsafe certificate acknowledging these skills.

Approximately 30 minutes is added to the classroom day to deliver and assess the module properly. Organisations arranging private training should therefore confirm the complete course timings with DTMK.

Who Is This Requalification Course For?
This course is intended for existing workplace first aiders who need to renew their First Aid at Work qualification and can provide an acceptable current or recently expired First Aid at Work certificate.
It is suitable for people who have a specific responsibility at work, or within voluntary and community activities, to provide first aid in a range of situations.

The requalification programme is shorter than the initial First Aid at Work course because learners are expected to be familiar with the qualification’s subjects and practical skills. Training therefore progresses at a faster pace and should not be treated as an introductory course for someone without previous First Aid at Work training.
Learners who do not hold suitable previous certification will normally need to complete the full First Aid at Work course instead.
Requalification Eligibility and Expired Certificates
Learners must provide a copy of their current or previously issued First Aid at Work certificate before joining the requalification course. The certificate must be in a format accepted by the Health and Safety Executive.
Learners should make every effort to complete their requalification before their existing certificate expires. Once a First Aid at Work certificate has expired, the individual is no longer considered qualified to act as a workplace first aider.

Where a previous certificate has expired by more than one month before the requalification course begins, learners and employers should understand that:
-
The requalification programme covers the syllabus considerably faster than the initial course
-
The learner is expected to retain sufficient knowledge and practical ability from their previous training
-
There may be an increased risk of the learner failing to achieve the required standard
-
Health and Safety Executive guidance indicates that completing the full First Aid at Work course may be the more prudent option
Please send DTMK a copy of the learner’s previous certificate before booking if there is any uncertainty about eligibility. We can then check the proposed route and discuss the most appropriate course.
Entry Requirements
Learners must:
-
Be at least 14 years old on the first day of training
-
Hold an acceptable current or previously issued First Aid at Work certificate
-
Provide evidence of their previous qualification before the course
-
Complete the required e-learning before attending the classroom day
-
Be able to perform the required practical first aid skills at floor level

There are no other formal entry requirements. However, Qualsafe strongly recommends that learners have a minimum of Level 1 literacy and numeracy, or an equivalent standard, because the course includes online learning and two written multiple-choice assessments.

The requalification course progresses at a faster pace than the initial First Aid at Work course. Learners are therefore expected to retain a reasonable level of knowledge and practical competence from their previous training.

Due to the practical nature of the classroom session, learners should wear suitable clothing and flat footwear.
Trousers are recommended so that learners can participate comfortably and safely in floor-level activities.
Completing the E-Learning
The online element must be completed in full before the learner attends the face-to-face classroom session. DTMK will check each learner’s completion status before classroom training begins.

Each learner will need:
-
Their own email address
-
Reliable internet access
-
Access to a suitable desktop or laptop computer
-
Approximately 6 hours to complete the online learning
-
To complete the e-learning before the stated deadline

The Qualsafe platform is best viewed using a current version of Google Chrome, Firefox or Safari. A desktop or laptop is recommended because some content may not display clearly on smaller mobile screens.
E-learning access is issued individually once the booking has been confirmed, the required learner information and previous certificate evidence have been received, and payment has been made.
Because DTMK incurs a separate cost when e-learning access is issued, access will not be released before payment. Access is personal to the named learner and must not be shared.
Learners should begin promptly rather than leaving the course until immediately before the deadline. Anyone experiencing technical difficulty should contact DTMK as soon as possible so that appropriate support can be arranged.
A learner who has not completed the entire e-learning course cannot progress to the classroom training. Where permitted, they may need to be transferred to a later course.
Accessibility and Reasonable Adjustments
DTMK is committed to making training and assessment accessible wherever a reasonable adjustment is permitted.
Please tell us about any disability, injury, medical condition, learning need, language need or other circumstance that may affect participation as early as possible. Some adjustments require prior approval from Qualsafe, and supporting information may need to be submitted before the course.
The qualification requires learners to demonstrate practical competence personally. To achieve the regulated qualification, a learner must complete the required practical assessments without physical assistance from another person.
Reasonable adjustments may support how training or assessment is accessed, but they cannot remove or reduce the competence required by the qualification.
Learners who may find online learning or the written assessments difficult should contact DTMK in confidence before the course. Permitted support or alternative assessment arrangements can then be considered in accordance with the Qualsafe requirements.

Maintaining Your First Aid at Work Qualification
Learners who successfully complete the blended requalification course receive the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF). The certificate is valid for 3 years.

To remain qualified as a workplace first aider, the qualification must be renewed again before the new certificate expires.

Employers and first aiders should monitor certificate expiry dates and arrange requalification in sufficient time.
Once a certificate has expired, the individual is no longer considered qualified to act as a first aider in the workplace.

Qualsafe also recommends annual refresher training to help first aiders maintain their basic skills and remain up to date with changes in first aid practice.

The employer remains responsible for deciding how many first aiders are required and which level of training is appropriate through a suitable first aid needs assessment.
Private Blended First Aid at Work Requalification Training
This course can be arranged privately for eligible groups of up to 12 learners.

The face-to-face classroom day may be delivered at your organisation’s venue or, subject to availability and suitable arrangements, at the DTMK training centre in Bletchley, Milton Keynes.
Before confirming the course, DTMK will need to check that each learner holds suitable previous First Aid at Work certification.

If training is delivered at your venue, the room must be suitable for practical first aid training and assessment. It should provide:
-
Sufficient clear floor space for practical activities
-
Suitable seating and writing surfaces
-
Adequate lighting, heating and ventilation
-
Safe access and emergency exits
-
Appropriate toilet facilities
