The Same Emergency First Aid at Work Qualification, Delivered Through Blended Learning

The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF) delivered through blended learning leads to the same regulated qualification as the traditional classroom course.

Blended learning changes how the training is delivered; it does not change the qualification, learning outcomes or assessment standard.

Learners first complete approximately 2.5 hours of approved e-learning. This required online learning must be completed in full before attending the face-to-face classroom session.

The classroom session builds on the online learning through trainer-led teaching, practical demonstrations, repeated skills practice and assessment. All required practical assessments and the multiple-choice question paper are completed face to face.

This delivery method can reduce the time employees spend away from the workplace while retaining essential practical training and assessment with an approved trainer.

How the Blended Course Works

The course is divided into two compulsory elements:

  • Approximately 2.5 hours of approved e-learning completed before the classroom session

  • A 4.5-hour face-to-face classroom session containing trainer-led learning, practical skills development and assessment

The e-learning is not an optional introduction. It must be completed in full before the learner attends the classroom session.

Learners must also attend the complete face-to-face session and successfully complete every required assessment to achieve the qualification.

DTMK normally includes Qualsafe’s optional catastrophic bleeding training and practical assessment. Approximately 30 minutes may be added to the classroom time to deliver and assess this additional module properly.

What Is Covered Online?

The e-learning introduces and develops knowledge across the Emergency First Aid at Work syllabus, including:

  • The role and responsibilities of a first aider

  • Infection control, consent, first aid equipment and incident reporting

  • Assessing an incident and casualty

  • Conducting a scene survey and primary survey

  • Summoning appropriate assistance

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation

  • Managing an unresponsive casualty

  • The recovery position

  • Responding to a seizure

  • Responding to choking

  • Recognising and managing shock

  • Burns and scalds

  • Wounds and bleeding

  • Direct pressure, wound packing and tourniquet application

  • Minor injuries, including cuts, grazes, embedded objects, bruises, nosebleeds, splinters, insect stings and bites

The classroom session revisits and develops relevant knowledge where required. Completion of the e-learning does not replace the practical training or assessment.

What Happens During the Classroom Session?

During the face-to-face session, learners develop, practise and demonstrate the practical skills required by the qualification.

The classroom programme includes:

  • The role and responsibilities of a first aider

  • Infection control, consent and incident reporting

  • Scene and casualty assessment

  • Conducting a primary survey

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and safe AED use

  • Managing an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally

  • The recovery position and continual monitoring

  • Responding to seizures

  • Responding to a choking casualty

  • Managing external bleeding and shock

  • Completing the required practical assessments

  • Completing the multiple-choice question paper

DTMK also includes practical catastrophic bleeding training covering wound packing and the application of improvised and manufactured tourniquets.

How Is the Course Assessed?

All assessments take place during the face-to-face classroom session. The e-learning prepares learners for the classroom training and assessment but does not contribute towards the learner’s final mark.

Learners must successfully complete four mandatory practical assessments:

  • CPR and the safe use of an automated external defibrillator

  • Responding to a choking casualty

  • Managing an unresponsive casualty

  • Managing wounds, bleeding and shock

Learners must also complete a 15-question multiple-choice question paper under assessment conditions. The minimum pass mark is 11 out of 15.

The qualification is graded Pass or Fail. Every mandatory practical assessment and the written assessment must be completed successfully for the qualification to be awarded.

Practical competence is assessed during the classroom session. Learners must therefore participate fully and demonstrate the required practical skills themselves.

Catastrophic Bleeding Training Included

DTMK includes Qualsafe’s optional catastrophic bleeding module as standard on this Blended Emergency First Aid at Work course, unless an organisation specifically asks us not to include it.

The additional practical training covers:

  • Recognising life-threatening bleeding

  • Applying direct pressure

  • Wound packing

  • Using an improvised tourniquet

  • Applying a manufactured tourniquet

  • Practical assessment of catastrophic bleeding management

Learners who successfully complete the optional training and practical assessment receive additional wording on their Qualsafe certificate acknowledging these skills.

Approximately 30 minutes is added to the classroom session to deliver and assess the module properly. Organisations arranging private training should therefore confirm the complete course timings with DTMK.

Who Is This Qualification For?

This qualification is intended for people who have a specific responsibility at work, or within voluntary and community activities, to provide help in emergency first aid situations.

It may be appropriate for designated emergency first aiders working in lower-risk environments or organisations whose first aid needs assessment identifies Emergency First Aid at Work as the appropriate level of training.

The course develops the essential skills needed to respond to incidents including cardiac arrest, an unresponsive casualty, choking, seizures, wounds, bleeding, shock and minor injuries.

Emergency First Aid at Work is not automatically suitable for every organisation. Employers remain responsible for determining the number of first aiders required and the appropriate level of training through a suitable first aid needs assessment.

Workplaces with greater hazards, more complex needs or circumstances requiring broader first aid knowledge may need the full First Aid at Work qualification instead.

If you are uncertain which qualification your organisation requires, use our First Aid Requirements Calculator or contact DTMK before arranging training.

Entry Requirements

Learners must be at least 14 years old on the first day of training.

There are no other formal entry requirements. However, Qualsafe recommends that learners have a minimum of Level 1 literacy and numeracy, or an equivalent standard, because the course includes online learning and a written multiple-choice assessment.

Learners must be able to perform the required practical skills at floor level. These include cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the practical management of an unresponsive casualty.

Due to the practical nature of the classroom session, learners should wear suitable clothing and flat footwear. Trousers are recommended to allow learners to participate comfortably and safely in floor-level activities.

Completing the E-Learning

The online element must be completed in full before the learner attends the face-to-face classroom session.

DTMK will check each learner’s completion status before classroom training begins.

Each learner will need:

  • Their own email address

  • Reliable internet access

  • Access to a suitable desktop or laptop computer

  • Approximately 2.5 hours to complete the online learning

  • To complete the e-learning before the stated deadline

The Qualsafe platform is best viewed using a current version of Google Chrome, Firefox or Safari. A desktop or laptop is recommended because some content may not display clearly on smaller mobile screens.

Access to the e-learning is issued individually once the booking has been confirmed, the required learner details have been received and payment has been made.

Because DTMK incurs a separate cost when e-learning access is issued, access will not be released before payment. E-learning access is personal to the named learner and must not be shared.

Learners should begin promptly rather than leaving the course until immediately before the deadline. Anyone experiencing technical difficulty should contact DTMK as soon as possible so that appropriate support can be arranged.

A learner who has not completed the entire e-learning course cannot progress to the classroom training. Where permitted, they may need to be transferred to a later course.

Accessibility and Reasonable Adjustments

DTMK is committed to making training and assessment accessible wherever a reasonable adjustment is permitted.

Please tell us about any disability, injury, medical condition, learning need, language need or other circumstance that may affect participation as early as possible. Some adjustments require prior approval from Qualsafe and supporting information may need to be submitted before the course.

The qualification requires learners to demonstrate practical competence personally. To achieve the regulated qualification, a learner must complete the required practical assessments without physical assistance from another person.

Reasonable adjustments may support how training or assessment is accessed, but they cannot remove or reduce the competence required by the qualification.

Learners who may find online learning or the written assessment difficult should contact DTMK in confidence before the course. Permitted support or alternative assessment arrangements can then be considered in accordance with Qualsafe’s requirements.

Qualsafe also recommends annual refresher training to help first aiders maintain their basic skills and keep up to date with changes in first aid practice.

Learners who subsequently require broader workplace first aid knowledge may progress to the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF).
