The Top 5 Questions Nurseries Ask About Paediatric First Aid Training

When it comes to keeping children safe, nurseries and early years settings know that first aid training is absolutely essential.  Yet with so many courses available, it’s completely normal for nursery managers to have questions about what’s required, how long training lasts, and what options are available.

At DTMK Training Services, we work with nurseries, pre-schools, and childminders across Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas.  Here are the five most common questions we’re asked about paediatric first aid training for schools and nurseries – along with the answers you need.

1. What qualification do we actually need?

The vast majority of nurseries require staff to hold the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF).  This is the recognised two-day course that meets the requirements of both Ofsted and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework.

If you care for children under five, this is the qualification your team needs to be fully compliant and confident in responding to medical emergencies involving babies and children.

2. Can we do the course in a single day?

Yes and no.  There’s a one-day version called the Emergency Paediatric First Aid (RQF) course, but it’s only suitable for staff who work with other fully qualified paediatric first aiders on site.

If you’re unsure which version is right for your setting, we can help you decide.  Many nurseries choose a mix of both courses, ensuring every staff member is trained while keeping costs manageable.

3. Can staff complete part of the training online?

Absolutely.  Through our Qualsafe e-Learning platform, you can choose a blended learning format.  This means your staff complete the theory online in their own time, followed by a single practical training day at our venue in Milton Keynes.

This approach is perfect for childminders, nursery teams, and support staff who struggle to find two full consecutive days away from work.  It’s flexible, interactive, and fully recognised by Ofsted and the EYFS.

4. How long does the qualification last?

The Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid is valid for three years.  We recommend planning your refreshers early, as renewals involve attending another practical session to update skills and knowledge.  Regular training ensures your team stays confident and compliant with the latest Resuscitation Council and HSE guidance.

5. Can you train our team at our own nursery?

Yes.  We regularly deliver workplace first aid courses directly in nurseries and schools across Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, and Northamptonshire.  We can also host training at our Qualsafe approved first aid centre in Bletchley, where you’ll benefit from our full range of modern equipment and training resources.

Our aim is always to make training accessible, affordable, and genuinely useful – not just a box-ticking exercise.
