Basic Life Support and Defibrillator Training: Busting the Myths About Using an AED

Despite thousands of public defibrillators being installed across the UK, many people still hesitate to use them.  The reason is simple.  Myths.  From thinking you could shock the wrong person to believing only medical staff can operate one, there are plenty of misconceptions that stop bystanders from stepping in when it matters most.

At DTMK Training Services in Milton Keynes, our basic life support and defibrillator training helps people understand the truth.  You cannot do any harm with a defibrillator if you follow its instructions.  Every unit gives clear, step-by-step voice prompts that guide you through what to do.  They even check the heart rhythm automatically and will only deliver a shock if one is needed.

Another common myth is that you could get electrocuted while helping.  In reality, defibrillators are designed with built-in safety systems.  As long as you follow the voice prompts and make sure nobody is touching the patient when the shock is delivered, the process is completely safe.

Our courses combine practical, hands-on training with realistic scenarios so you can build confidence in every step of the chain of survival.  You will learn to recognise cardiac arrest, call for help, perform CPR, and use a defibrillator safely.  Once you have done it in training, you will know you could do it for real.

Knowing how to use an AED could double someone’s chance of survival.  The machines are there for everyone to use, and with just a little training, you could be the reason someone gets a second chance at life.

Join one of our upcoming sessions in Milton Keynes or book a course for your workplace or community group.  Let’s make sure no one hesitates to act when every second counts.
