Day Course

Having a good understanding of emergency paediatric first aid is vital for the safety of children and, in some cases, can mean the difference between life and death.

​

The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid (RQF) has been developed in line with current Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) requirements. It is designed for those who need to provide emergency first aid to infants and children, and is particularly suitable for:

  • Individuals who have gained a Level 2 or Level 3 childcare qualification and are entering an early years setting, wishing to be included in staff-to-child ratios in line with EYFS requirements

  • Anyone who cares for infants and children, including parents, guardians and grandparents

Successful candidates will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to:

  • Provide safe, prompt and effective first aid in emergency situations involving infants and children

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the role and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider

  • Respond confidently to a wide range of paediatric first aid incidents

​​

This qualification forms part of the QA First Aid suite of qualifications. The qualification and learning outcomes are based on the recommendations of:

  • The Resuscitation Council (UK)

  • Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

  • A distinguished panel of experts in emergency medical care

​​

This QA qualification is:

  • For people who are required to provide emergency first aid to infants and/or children

  • Based on the EYFS syllabus for emergency first aid courses

​​

By the end of the course, learners will have developed the confidence and practical competencies needed to act effectively in emergency paediatric first aid situations.

What is covered 

  • The roles and responsibilities of an emergency paediatric first aider

  • Assessing an emergency situation

  • Dealing with an unresponsive infant or child

  • Recovery Position

  • CPR and defibrillation

  • Choking

  • Minor Injuries

  • Bites and Stings

  • Seizures

  • Bleeding and shock

Intended audience

​

This qualification is for anyone who cares for children and infants; including parents, guardians, grandparents or people who have a professional involvement with children and infants.

​

Entry requirements

​

Learners must be at least 14 years old on the first day of the training and be able to perform practical tasks at floor level. There are no other formal entry requirements, but we strongly recommend that Learners have a minimum of Level 1 in literacy and numeracy or equivalent.

Other course requirements

​

Due to the practical nature of this course, Learners should wear appropriate clothing and footwear, e.g. trousers and flat footwear.

Requalification requirements

​

This qualification is valid for a period of 3 years. The Learner needs to retake the qualification before the certificate expiry date to remain qualified.

​

Learners must complete all assessments successfully within the registration period to achieve the qualification. The maximum period to achieve this qualification, including any referrals is 4 weeks.
