The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Administering Emergency Oxygen (RQF) has been designed for those who are responsible for providing care to casualties where the use of emergency oxygen may be required. This qualification is particularly relevant to those working in high-risk environments or providing advanced first aid support.

​

Delivered over a half-day course, learners will gain an understanding of the clinical need for emergency oxygen, the safety considerations involved, and the skills required to administer oxygen appropriately when dealing with a range of conditions.

 

Successful candidates will:

  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of hypoxia in casualties

  • Understand the clinical indications and safety considerations for administering oxygen

  • Safely set up and operate oxygen delivery equipment

  • Demonstrate the safe, prompt and effective administration of emergency oxygen in accordance with current guidance

 

This qualification forms part of the QA First Aid suite of qualifications. The qualification and learning outcomes are based on the recommendations of:

  • The British Thoracic Society (BTS) Guidelines

  • UK Ambulance Services Clinical Practice Guidelines (JRCALC)

 

The objective of the qualification is to prepare learners to effectively recognise hypoxic casualties and administer emergency oxygen using the Qualsafe BTS Oxygen Guidelines Flow Chart.

 

By the end of the course, learners will have the knowledge, confidence and practical competence to administer emergency oxygen safely and effectively, in line with national guidelines.

What is covered 

  • Use of oxygen, including:

    • Health and safety principles for use of oxygen

    • Benefits of oxygen administration
      Indications and contra-indications for emergency oxygen

    • Dangers of compressed gas

  • The use of emergency oxygen during CPR and AED usage

  • Pre-operational inspections of emergency oxygen equipment

  • Clinical need for the administration of emergency oxygen

  • Oxygen delivery devices, including:

    • Non re-breather mask

    • Pocket mask

Intended audience

​

This qualification is ideal for people who have a specific responsibility to be able to safely administer and monitor the effects of emergency oxygen within their scope of practice. This includes (but is not limited to) the following roles:

  • First aider

  • Community first responder

  • Offshore first aider

Important information regarding scope of practice

Achievement of this qualification confirms that learners have met the theoretical and practical requirements for administering emergency oxygen

 

This qualification does not constitute a licence to practise. The scope of practice is determined by the organisation responsible for oxygen provision

 

This qualification does not entitle candidates to obtain, store or administer oxygen without appropriate clinical governance arrangements in place

Entry requirements

​

Learners must be at least 16 years old on the first day of the training and be able to perform practical tasks at floor level.

​

Before registering on to this qualification, you must hold a minimum of a First Aid at Work or a higher-level emergency care qualification or recognised equivalent.

 

There are no other formal entry requirements, but we strongly recommend Learners have a minimum of Level 2 in literacy and numeracy or equivalent.

Other course requirements

​

Due to the practical nature of this course, Learners should wear appropriate clothing and footwear, e.g. trousers and flat footwear.

Requalification requirements

​

This qualification is valid for a period of 3 years. The Learner needs to retake the qualification before the certificate expiry date to remain qualified.

Assessment methods:

•  Theory assessment/multiple choice question paper: 

1 x 10 question paper (minimum score 7)

•  Practical assessment – 5 completed throughout the course

Learners must complete all assessments in the unit successfully within the registration period to achieve the qualification. The maximum period to achieve this qualification, including any referrals is 4 weeks.
