When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, every minute matters. Survival often depends on what happens before the ambulance arrives, not after. This is where the Chain of Survival becomes vital, showing how ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference.
At DTMK Training Services, we deliver professional basic life support and defibrillator training across Milton Keynes and nearby counties. Our goal is to give people the confidence to take action and save lives when it counts.
What Is the Chain of Survival
The Chain of Survival is promoted by the Resuscitation Council UK and highlights the four key stages that increase survival following a cardiac arrest. Each step plays an essential role in giving a casualty the best possible outcome.
Early Recognition and Calling for Help
Learn to recognise when someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally. Call 999 immediately and follow the operator’s instructions.
Early CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
Begin chest compressions straight away. High-quality CPR maintains oxygen flow to the brain and vital organs. Acting quickly can double or even triple the chance of survival.
Early Defibrillation
A defibrillator (AED) can restart a heart in cardiac arrest. These devices are safe and simple to use, with clear spoken instructions. Each minute without defibrillation reduces survival by roughly ten percent.
Post-Resuscitation Care
Once the emergency services arrive, they continue with advanced treatment and transport the patient to hospital. Early action from bystanders gives them a far stronger chance of recovery.
Why Bystanders Are the Key Link
Most cardiac arrests occur outside hospital, often at home or in public spaces. When bystanders act fast, survival rates increase significantly. Many people hesitate because they are afraid of doing something wrong, but inaction is far more dangerous.
Our basic life support and defibrillator training helps remove that fear. You will learn how to recognise an emergency, perform CPR, use an AED safely, and stay calm under pressure. By the end of the course, you will have the knowledge and confidence to act without hesitation.
