Five First Aid Skills Everyone Should Know Before Christmas

The Christmas season brings excitement, good food, and time with family, but it also brings a spike in avoidable accidents.  Every year, hospitals report an increase in burns, falls, and choking incidents during December.  Add in the winter cold, icy pavements, and the extra stress of rushing around, and it is easy to see how emergencies can happen in a split second.

The good news is that a little knowledge goes a long way.  With the right first aid training, you can stay calm, take control, and potentially save a life.  As a Qualsafe approved first aid centre based in Milton Keynes, DTMK Training Services is here to help you feel prepared rather than panicked.  Below are five vital skills that everyone should know before Christmas.

1. How to Perform CPR

If someone collapses and stops breathing normally, every second matters.  Basic life support training teaches you exactly what to do, and doing something is always better than doing nothing.

Check for breathing, call 999, and begin chest compressions in the centre of the chest, pushing firmly and steadily to the rhythm of a familiar song such as Stayin’ Alive.  If a defibrillator (AED) is available, use it as soon as possible and follow its spoken instructions.

Survival rates more than double when bystanders start CPR quickly.  Imagine the difference that could make if the person in need is your parent, partner, or friend.

2. How to Treat Burns and Scalds

From hot roasting trays to boiling water and candle flames, burns are a leading cause of festive injuries.  The correct first aid response is simple but often done incorrectly.

Cool the burn immediately under cool running water for at least twenty minutes.  Do not use ice, butter, toothpaste, or creams as these can make things worse.  Remove any tight clothing or jewellery before swelling begins.  Then, cover the burn loosely with cling film or a clean, non-fluffy dressing.

If the burn is large, blistered, on the face, or involves a child, seek medical help right away.

3. How to React if Someone Is Choking

Christmas dinner, party snacks, and laughing while eating all raise the risk of choking.  Knowing what to do can prevent tragedy.

If someone is choking but still able to speak or cough, encourage them to keep coughing.  If the airway is completely blocked, give up to five firm back blows between the shoulder blades.  Check after each one to see if the obstruction has cleared.

If it has not, perform up to five abdominal thrusts by standing behind the person, placing your arms around their waist, and pulling inwards and upwards.  Alternate between back blows and abdominal thrusts until the item dislodges or medical help arrives.

Once the blockage is gone, always seek medical advice in case of internal injury.

4. How to Help Someone Who Has Collapsed

Whether it is fainting from the heat of the kitchen, slipping on ice, or drinking a bit too much at the office party, collapses are common in December.  Your first steps can make a big difference.

Check for danger, then gently check for a response.  If there is none, open the airway and look, listen, and feel for normal breathing.  If they are breathing, place them on their side in the recovery position and call 999.  If they are not breathing, begin CPR immediately.

Basic life support skills are not just for paramedics.  They are for ordinary people who want to be ready when the unexpected happens.

5. How to Control Severe Bleeding

Paper cuts and small nicks are one thing, but serious bleeding needs urgent attention.  Deep cuts from carving knives, broken decorations, or DIY tools can cause rapid blood loss.

Apply direct pressure to the wound using a clean cloth, towel, or dressing.  If blood soaks through, do not remove the original layer.  Simply add another on top and keep pressing.  Elevate the injured limb if possible.

If the bleeding is heavy, or if there is an embedded object, call 999 straight away.  Never try to remove anything stuck in the wound.

Learning how to manage bleeding confidently can stop panic and save precious time before help arrives.
