Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction that requires immediate recognition and treatment. Combined with the ability to deliver effective basic life support and use a defibrillator, these are vital skills that can save lives in the community.

​

The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Adult Basic Life Support, Automated External Defibrillation, and Management of Anaphylaxis (RQF) is a regulated and nationally recognised qualification designed for members of the public, volunteers and community groups. It is also suitable for those who wish to refresh or update their knowledge between longer first aid qualifications. This course provides the essential practical skills needed to act quickly and effectively in an adult medical emergency.

 

Successful candidates will:

  • Demonstrate the safe and effective administration of adult CPR

  • Safely set up and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) in line with Resuscitation Council (UK) guidance

  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and respond with safe, effective treatment, including the use of auto-injectors

  • Gain the confidence to provide prompt, life-saving care in emergencies involving cardiac arrest or severe allergic reaction

This qualification forms part of the QA First Aid suite of qualifications. The qualification and learning outcomes are based on the recommendations of:

  • The Resuscitation Council (UK)

  • A distinguished panel of experts in emergency medical care

This QA qualification is:

  • Suitable for members of the public, volunteers and community groups who wish to gain or refresh essential life-saving skills

  • Designed to provide practical competence in delivering adult basic life support, defibrillation and the management of anaphylaxis

By the end of the course, learners will have the knowledge, skills and confidence to respond effectively to adult medical emergencies involving cardiac arrest or anaphylaxis.

Intended audience

​

This qualification is for people who have a specific interest or responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities, who may need to provide BLS interventions, safely use an AED and manage a casualty suffering from anaphylaxis.

Entry requirements

​

Learners must be at least 14 years old on the first day of the training and be able to perform practical tasks at floor level. There are no other formal entry requirements, but we strongly recommend that Learners have a minimum of Level 1 in literacy and numeracy or equivalent.

Other course requirements

​

Due to the practical nature of this course, Learners should wear appropriate clothing and footwear, e.g. trousers and flat footwear.

Requalification requirements

​

This qualification is valid for a period of 3 years. The Learner needs to retake the qualification before the certificate expiry date to remain qualified.

Learners must complete all assessments in the unit successfully within the registration period to achieve the qualification. The maximum period to achieve this qualification, including any referrals is 3 weeks.
