The main difference between Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) and First Aid at Work (FAW) is the depth of training and the level of workplace risk they are designed to cover. Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) Emergency First Aid at Work is a one day qualification designed for: Low risk workplaces, such as offices, shops, and small businesses Employers who need basic first aid cover EFAW focuses on: Assessing an incident CPR and use of an AED Choking Bleeding and shock Basic emergency response It is often suitable where hazards are limited and injuries are less likely to be serious. First Aid at Work (FAW) First Aid at Work is a three day qualification intended for: Higher risk workplaces, such as construction, manufacturing, warehousing, and engineering Larger organisations with more complex risks FAW includes everything covered in EFAW, plus additional content such as: Management of fractures and serious injuries A wider range of medical conditions More in depth casualty assessment Longer term care until emergency services arrive Which course does my business need? The correct course depends on your workplace risk assessment, the nature of your work, and the number of employees. Some businesses may need a combination of both EFAW and FAW trained staff. In many settings, yes, paediatric first aid training is mandatory. Early years settings and nurseries For early years providers, paediatric first aid is a legal requirement under the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework. EYFS requires that: At least one person with a current paediatric first aid certificate must be on the premises at all times when children are present A paediatric first aider must also be available on outings The qualification must meet the content and duration requirements set out in the EYFS framework These requirements are enforced through inspection and regulation by Ofsted.
